Refugees buy Food – only – If they have Money !
One of the hardest thing for Refugee families is the limited amount of Money which affects their ability to buy Food. Lack of Food is primarily a result of poverty and a heavy reliance on outside assistance.
Refugees typically can only afford to buy very limited amount of food which often falls short of their nutritional requirements
Refugees rely on aid organizations and friends and family to help them survive.
Most Refugees have developed good coping skills and can go easily go without food for few days or eat very small amounts.
Some Refugees maintain this lifestyle even after their Captivity is over .They might live in freedom in Canada or USA and still continue to eat small portions because it has become a habit during their Captivity. Or they skip eating meals because it has become a normal habit to them.
They might feel guilty of having so much food in their new home country- and remembering the other Refugees who are still struggling and often go to bed hungry.
Typically the Refugees eat very simple and basic food. These food items are typically easy to prepare, require minimal cooking equipment, and have a longer shelf life. Common examples are rice, beans, lentils, chickpeas Oil, Spices and canned goods.
Things they cannot afford to buy too often are Milk, Eggs and Meat. They like fresh fruit and vegetables daily but it is not always possible because of the cost.
The foods Refugees can /cannot buy – is directly related to the dept of their poverty and their reliance on outside help.
It is hard for parents if they cannot feed their children and maintain positive attitude if there is no food.
We can help Refugees if we work together.
